Key areas
Effective youth empowerment programming in Homestead, Florida, USA, must help youth transcend the many barriers that limit their options. Such programming must reach a wide array of young people and help them address the problems that exist not only in their own lives but also in the life of their community. The enFAMILIA GL’s group program follows the model created by DreamYard’s ACTION project in Bronx, New York. It is based on the premise that if the youth is to break the cycle of poverty in their communities, they must learn to articulate the challenges they face in their individual lives. In doing so, they will discover the commonalities in the difficulties that they face and learn to craft community-wide solutions.
The enFAMILIA GL’s goals are to ensure that every graduating participant:
• Takes an active role in facilitating community dialogue and developing events within the community (i.e.: preparing monthly social gatherings for the community, writing/ editing the GL newsletter, facilitating community building workshops, being a community facilitator at the GLs experience in the summer) • Develops a greater sense of their artistic prowess (i.e.: taking part in Arts workshops and creating/ developing large thematic arts projects) • Graduates High school and gains admission to a post-secondary educational institution of their choosing (i.e.: by participating in school clubs and other social organizations, and through various college info-sessions and guidance opportunities)
